Baabe through the ages
How a small settlement between forest, Selliner See and the Baltic Sea became a popular seaside resort on Mönchgut.
From fishing village to seaside resort
Baabe lies at the narrow transition between the Granitz and the Mönchgut peninsula. For centuries, fishing, farming and the forest shaped the lives of its few inhabitants.
With the rise of seaside tourism on the Baltic coast in the 19th century, summer guests discovered the fine-sand beach. Guesthouses and villas were built, and Baabe gradually developed into a resort.
The Rasender Roland
The narrow-gauge railway of the Rügensche BäderBahn links Putbus with Binz, Sellin, Baabe and Göhren. Extending the line to Göhren around 1899 gave Baabe a direct rail connection. To this day the steam railway is both an experience and a practical means of transport for many guests.
Baabe today
Today Baabe is a quiet seaside resort with a spa park, Haus des Gastes, Strandstraße and kilometres of beach. Cycle paths lead to Sellin, Göhren and into the South-East Rügen Biosphere Reserve. More destinations are on our surroundings page.
